Chapter 7

Chapter 7 was one of my favorites because it discussed issues that I was completely unaware before I took this class.  I had no idea that the elderly population was still so interested in sexual activities and that they took part in them just about as much as the younger generation.  Now this is not true for all older adults because there is a number of them who have physical ailments that simply do not allow them to remain sexually active.  Although the younger generation thinks of intercourse as the main form of sexual activity, elders view it as being a number of different things: kissing, touching, cuddling, being romantic, etc.  There is also a large number of elders who fall in the LGBT category.  It is not unusual for elders to enjoy an alternate sexual lifestyle.

Below is a song by the Beatles that talks about love and old age.  I thought it was really cute and a blast from the past, so enjoy.

"When I'm 64" by The Beatles
When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away

Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Here is an example of an elder couple who more than likely still enjoy their sexual experiences:)

The link below is to an article that talks about sex in nursing homes.  This is a major issue, not only are the people engaging in consensual sexual acts, but there is also a huge issue with sexually related crimes happening within retirement homes and assisted living facilities.  It is important to educate the workers of these facilities so they are aware of both the positive and negative effects associated with sexuality among elders.

This is a website that has a lot of useful information about the issue of sex in nursing homes and other living arrangements for elders.

This website is for the Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders.  It is full of great information on the alternative life choices of some of the elders.

Here is a sample video on older people remaining sexually active.
