Chapter 12

Chapter 12 is also one of the most important chapters in the book because it deals with the issues of paid and non-paid roles in productive aging.  Being productive in our twilight years can be challenging to some elders.  I found that volunteering can be a very healthy way for elders to age productively.  Retirement is a fickle subject these days.  The Baby Boomer generation is inching it's way towards retirement and bringing with them a growing concern that retirees' benefits will run out.  It is extremely important for people to remain at work for as long as they possibly can.  Every year you can continue to work will help in putting more money into programs like Social Security and Pension programs.  This is a global problem, not just one that our country is facing.  With a growing population of elders and a decreasing number in the work force, we may see a dip in such programs.  There are a growing number of people who are finding themselves unable to retire in the wake of the recent economic depression our country has faced.

(Favorite Things - with words changed to fit the AARP theme.)
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, when the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, when the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.
